7th Grade General Music
General Music is an exploratory course taken by 7th grade students. In General Music, students learn about different periods in music history, music theory, and basic skills in guitar. The General Music class schedule is as follows:
General Music Course Outline
1. Students will discuss major elements and how they are put together to create mood and style.
2. Students will listen to a variety of song styles from the Medieval to the Contemporary time periods and be able to identify them
as rhythmic, harmonic, or melodic, as well as different genres.
3. Students will learn about four time periods in music history as follows: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical.
4. Students will learn basic music theory (notes, values, rhythms) and are introduced to scales and time signatures.
5. Students will be introduced to the guitar, utilizing notes, values, key signatures, scales, and chords.
Classroom Expectations
*Students will have a folder with pockets and a pencil every day. They will have the option to leave this in the classroom.
*Students are expected to be on time for class.
*Students will be expected to sit in seats immediately after arriving to class and begin to answer the "Music Mystery" and music
styles questions.
*Students will not bring gum or candy into the room.
*Students will not play the piano or any other instrument unless given permission by Mrs. Gibson.
*Students will be expected to participate in class discussion and other team activities.
*Students will raise their hands and address each other in a respectful manner.
*When instruments are passed out, students will take care of them and not play until instructed to do so.
*Students will respect themselves, their classmates, and their teacher.
*Students will have a positive attitude!
