*The PDF of the Review Sheet for Music is here:

                                                                     Review Sheet for Music

*Five basic elements of music:

          1.  Tone Color- the unique quality or qualities that make each sound different from other sounds.  For example, a violin                   does not sound like a trumpet because they are made of different materials.  However, even though they are made of the                     same materials, a violin and a cello do not sound the same either.  This is because they are different sizes and have different

strings.  These are examples of things that affect something's tone color.

          2.  Rhythm-  a pattern of sound and silence.  Songs are made up of different rhythms.

        3.  Melody-  the main part of a song.  It is the part of a song that you usually know or recognize.

          4.  Harmony-  the background music.  Any instruments or singers that are not the melody are the harmony.

          5.  Form-  the "blueprint" of a song.  This is the order of events in a piece of music.

**Please look up the instruments below using this link: https://www.mydso.com/dso-kids/learn-and-listen/instruments

*Tone Color Clusters (Instrument Families):

          1.  Strings

          2.  Brass

          3.  Woodwinds

          4.  Percussion

          5.  Choir

*Name five different tone colors from each of the tone clusters:

          1.  violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, harp

          2.  French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, sousaphone

          3.  flute, piccolo, clarinet, oboe, English horn

          4.  bass drum, snare drum, timpani, cymbals, chimes

          5.  soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass

*What is the difference between melody, harmony, and rhythm?

Melody is the main part, harmony is the background, and rhythm deals with the beat.

*How do voices compare to the families of strings?

They imitate each other.  Choirs have voices that range from high to low.  Soprano is the highest voice, while                bass is the lowest.  The string family does the same thing: violin is the highest and bass is the lowest.

*How do voices compare to band families?

Same idea...they imitate each other.  However, the difference is that there are many more instruments in the              band families than there are in the string or choir families.

*In which family does the piano belong?

The piano belongs equally to the string family and the percussion family.  On the inside of a full size piano,                   there are 88 strings, which would put it in the string family.  However, to make the sound on a piano, there                   are little hammers that hit the strings when a key is touched.  This puts it also in the percussion family.

                                                                                                 April 20

*Please take the Medieval and Renaissance Quiz.  You may use your notes and your review sheet for this.  The link for the quiz is here:  https://forms.gle/DSCV3QEbR8Qc3EHr6

                                                           March 24

                                               RENAISSANCE (SOCIAL)

*Johann Gutenberg invented the printing press, which was basically like a giant stamp.  It helped get books distributed much faster since people didn't have to handwrite everything.  It also helped in printing music.

*Monarchies were still very much in power in most places.

*Kings still had absolute power (total control) over people in their kingdoms.

*Martin Luther led the Reformation because he disagreed with many of the policies of the Catholic church.

*Elizabeth I (the first) was the first queen in England to rule without a male by her side.

*In society, plump and pale was considered beautiful.  This showed that if one was plump, they were well fed and probably had a lot of money.  If they were pale, it showed that they didn't need to work outside to produce food (and probably had a lot of money).

*The word Renaissance is a French word that means "rebirth."  It was considered to be a "rebirth" from the Medieval, which was dark and violent.  The Renaissance had new inventions and new ideas and many viewed it as a fresh start.

*The Renaissance was considered to be an "Age of Enlightenment."  For example:

-Magellan attempted to go around the world.

-Christopher Columbus lands in America and thinks he's in India.

-Copernicus was an astronomer who came up with the theory that the universe revolved around the sun.

*Henry VIII (the 8th) was in charge of England until he died.  When he died, his oldest daughter, Mary, became queen.  When she died, his second daughter, Elizabeth, became queen.  Henry had six wives:

-He divorced Catherine of Aragon (wife #1).

-He beheaded Anne Boleyn (wife #2).

-Jane Seymour (wife #3) died shortly after childbirth.

-He divorced Anne of Cleves (wife #4).

-He beheaded Catherine Howard (wife #5).

-Catherine Parr (wife #6) outlived him.

**For some great explanation (and good entertainment), check out the two Henry VIII videos on the General Music Links page.

                                                                                                   March 25

                                                         RENAISSANCE (MUSIC)

*A composer is a name for someone who writes music.  The Renaissance had a few well-known composers: Gionvanni de Palestrina (from Italy), Thomas Morely (from England), John Dunstable (from England), and Carlo Gesualdo (from Italy).

*The Renaissance had some interesting instruments.  They included but are not limited to:

            -Zink

           -Lizard

           -Serpent

           -Hurdy Gurdy

           -Sacbut

           -Recorder

           -Krumhorn

           -Viol de Gamba

           -Bladderpipe

**Please visit this website to see and listen to the instruments.

https://www.music.iastate.edu/antiqua/instruments

*A renaissance consort was a fancy name for a group of instruments playing together in public.

*Sacred (religious) music was preserved by the church and was still in Latin.

*Secular (non-religious) music was in the language that the people spoke and had nothing to do with religion.

*Renaissance music was polyphonic; this meant that it had many different instruments or voices playing and singing at the same time.

*Music as we know it started to evolve; composers started to use round notes instead of neumes (which were square notes used in the Medieval time period).

*Music was written in irregular meter.  This meant it was difficult to play and sing and difficult to dance to.

*The instruments of the time period were "thin-sounding;" this just meant that they didn't have the same kind of volume and nice sound that current instruments have.  They are now considered to be ancient.

*There was a focus on acappella music.

*There was also a focus on instrumental music.

*The church services started to be written in the language that the people spoke.  This began with the Protestant church.

                                                                                              March 26

                                           RENAISSANCE (ART)

*There were many pieces of art that were carved during this time; specifically statues.

*The colors in the paintings were dull and drab.  There were no bright colors of paint.

*Most of the colors of paint were in earth tones (green, blue, gray, black, brown, red, yellow...)

*The pieces of art were more realistic than they were in the Medieval.

*There were many paintings of the nobility (rich people).  This is because the rich people could afford to have their pictures painted.

*There were pictures of court scenes; these showed people having fun in the royal court.

*There was still a focus on religion.

*Saints (holy figures) replaced gargoyles on the outside of buildings.

*William Shakespeare was a writer; he wrote many famous works, including "Romeo and Juliet."

*Some artists of the time included Donatello, Raphael, Michaelangelo (who painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and carved "The David") and DaVinci.

*Leonardo DaVinci was an inventor,

a musician, and a painter.  He

painted the Mona Lisa.

                                                           March 18

                                                     MEDIEVAL (SOCIAL)

*Kings and queens had absolute rule, which was total control over the people in their kingdoms.  They could make rules about silly things and people would still have to follow them.

*Kings were often thought of as tyrants because they abused their power.

*Men often wore leggings and tunics for their clothing.  Women wore dresses with many layers, so they were often uncomfortable.

*The medieval was a violent time.  There was a lot of public execution and torture.  There was also a lot of warfare.

*There was a large idea among people of "might makes right."  This meant that whether things in society were right or wrong depended on who was in power (such as a king or queen).

*The Catholic Church was very much in control of many aspects of life.

*Priests and noblemen were the only educated people; they were the only people who knew how to read and write.  This was done in an attempt to keep the rich people rich and the poor people poor.

*In the religion of Islam, Mohammed was the prophet.

*Joan of Arc was a teenage French girl who dressed as a male and joined the army, which was against the law.  She then led the army to important war victories and, claiming to hear voices from heaven, was burned at the stake.

*The Crusades were occurring; they were very violent religious wars.

*This is also the time of the bubonic plague.  It was known as the "black plague" or the "black death" and inspired the children's song "Ring Around the Rosy."

*A good way to earn honor was to become a page, a squire, or a knight.

*China invented gun powder and paper.

*Marco Polo went to China for trade and came back with spices and silk.

                                                                                                      March 19

                                                 MEDIEVAL (Music)

*Pope Gregory invented a series of chants (short songs) called Gregorian chant.  They were created to mark certain times during the church services, since the services were all in Latin.

*Latin is a religious and scientific language, but is rarely used in conversation.

*Church service chants were in Latin to show the order of the service: Gloria, Agnus Dei, Kyrie, and Consecration.

*"Sacred" means religious.  "Secular" means non-religious.

*All sacred music was in Latin.

*All secular music was in the language that the people spoke and had nothing to do with religion.

*Troubadours, trouveres, minstrels, and meisertsingers were all names for traveling musicians.  These were the names used in different countries.

                                                                                                     March 20

                                                      MEDIEVAL (Art)

*The art from the time period was thought of as a reflection of society.

*There were many portraits of the nobility (people who had money).

*Many of the paintings of the period were religious and based in the Bible.  For example:

-Madonna and Child (Virgin Mary and baby Jesus)

          -the Crucifixion

          -the Resurrection

          -angels

*There were many pictures of knights and fights, especially with dragons.

*The colors used were dark and heavy.

*The following features were very present in architecture: gargoyles, spires, arches, and flying buttresses.
